St Gervais Ski Breaks

St Gervais

St Gervais is the perfect base for a long ski weekend holiday

St Gervais is a charming ski and spa town resort in the Haute Savoie commune in The French Alps, conveniently located just under 1 hour from Geneva airport. It has been a popular tourist destination for over 100 years due to the incredible scenery, including breathtaking views of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain and the surrounding glacial peaks. Initial tourists were also attracted to the soothing properties of the resorts thermal spa and the rack and pinion railway constructed in 1904 which was originally intended to take people to the top of Mont Blanc!

These days St Gervais in justifiably renowned for its winter sports. Though not necessarily as famous as it's near neighbours of Chamonix and Morzine, St Gervais gives direct access to an amazingly varied selection of slopes in Megeve and Chamonix Les Houches (via the spectacular rack and pinion tramway), totalling more than 400km of terrain perfectly suited to all levels of skier. Furthermore, with Les Contamines just a short 10 minute minibus trip away adding another 100km of snow sure slopes this is a first rate ski area, which is the 3rd largest ski domain exclusively in France . The sense of this area being a "well kept secret" is further evidenced by the lack of the crowded pistes and lift queues associated with other mega resorts.

The town retains much of it's victorian architecture and splendour, offering a real sense of traditional French Alpine culture sadly missing in many of the more recently built resorts. During the day life revolves around the bustling market place, cafes, bars, shops, art galleries and artisanal bakeries providing a real French mountain street life culture. In the evening the bars, cafes and restaurants offer a relaxing end to a busy day on the slopes.

Devoid of the worst excesses of the "party animal crowd" suffered by many other resorts and the associated loud brash bars St Gervais has an air of quiet, cosy, French sophistication. The half a dozen bars and a dozen or so restaurants cater for all tastes.
